When You Need It? What it Does?
When do we need a self care prescription?
For sure when we are experiencing a big change / life transition, or a loss. Some big change examples are moving, ending a relationship, any loss, changing jobs, and changes too in our country’s political landscape.
Sometimes our soul is calling for a reinvention time. This is when we feel miserable and stuck. Not sure what is wrong, but we feel lousy and lifeless, unmotivated, going through the motions without vitality, joy, or purpose. Being stuck is a message it’s time for change, perhaps a big one, like a reinvention chapter! During these reinvention times we come to know, give birth to, and then reveal fully who we truly are. When we do this, we can’t help but change our outside circumstances and routines to now be in accordance with our new truths.
So what is a prescription for self care. A respected friend and colleague just shared with me her list as she is navigating a career growth spurt accompanied by a physical move to a new state, from Florida to Arizona. She knows life is unfolding beautifully and what she has been dreaming of is coming true in her real life, she is being called for a higher purpose as a healer. And while that is amazing, change is difficult, often very difficult for our human self. I loved her prescription for self care so much, I am sharing it verbatim.
Every day : Meditate,
Get some kind of outside in nature time,
Eat in a way that is loving and nurturing to my body,
Get my rest,
Stay off Facebook ,
Check in with a loved one so I am not isolating,
Be very gentle with myself.
This is an amazing self care prescription and I am so confident her transition will be a wonderful one. Why? Because it is filled with self compassion, tenderness, truth, and the call to go inside. As a therapist, I know people have the answers inside their own soul. I help people in my work facilitate exploring inside to find their truths. And then we strategize change, new strategies, and new skills. And many times serendipity takes over, and the pearls of learning new skills and new opportunities start to magically show up. Life can be an amazing journey when we take the risks, quiet ourselves, hear the whispers of our soul, and say yes to what newness is birthing on our inside and our outside.
As our country is in so much change and turmoil now. Dare I say we all need to go inward, hear our truth, and risk and brave our own unique rebirthings. Each of us can shine our light, thus making our world a better place.
