A trauma is any experience where a human feels a completely unexpected lack of safety, threat, harm, or grave danger. During a traumatic event the person has bodily visceral feelings of intense fear, appropriately so. After a person is no longer in danger, there is a natural instinct to bring completion to this experience. Regrettably, American society does not yet have fully in our culture a known way of processing the shock and terror of a traumatic event. Often, victims do not receive the effective care they need, resulting in the symptoms of trauma remaining trapped in the body.
Our normal support system may be encouraging us to move on; and we feel further distressed and isolated, which further adds to our trauma symptoms. Trauma symptoms include: not feeling safe in your body, anger, confusion, not feeling present in the here and now, shock, and withdrawal. It can feel like a hazy blur of time and you struggle to stop recalling the past and be present in your daily life now. Left untreated, the body may develop symptoms of anxiety, a racing heart beat, panic attacks, sleeplessness, nightmares, or chronic pain.
Just like a person who breaks a leg benefits from a cast for healing, the trauma survivor benefits and heals with excellent professional Trauma Informed Care.
